After Wolfram Alpha was released to the public on May 15, 2009, It’s been about 5 months and they’ve been hard at work attempting to improve upon their search offering. But nowadays, Wolfram Alpha hasn’t gone away, though. In fact, they’ve just announced an API for developers and a new iPhone app.

As we all know, Wolfram Alpha is an answer engine developed by Wolfram Research. It is an online service that answers factual queries directly by computing the answer from structured data, rather than providing a list of documents or web pages that might contain the answer as a search engine might.

The company put out a blog post about the new API without showcasing any example apps. However, the post, by Wolfram’s Schoeller Porter, does mention developer ideas for using Wolfram Alpha programmatically, from “researching cancer through computational biology” to “determining the optimal temperature for draft beer based on the current weather conditions.”

A spokesperson for Wolfram confirms that the API is also being used internally to develop the forthcoming Wolfram iPhone app. It’s quite possible that third-party applications harnessing the power of Wolfram Alpha might prove more popular than the engine itself.

Of course, these steps will hardly bring waves of new users to the WolframAlpha main website, but the technology from WolframAlpha is about to spread out across the internet. Just wait, this is going to blow your hair back.
